During the rainy season, tropical storms can wreak extensive water damage on houses, which can be costly to repair. Keep your home safe by preparing now with the following tips.

4 Ways to Prevent Rainy Season Damage to Your Home

1. Inspect Your Roof

Inspect your roof for worn-out, loose, or damaged shingles, which can crack and allow rainwater into your home. Clean out the roof gutters as well. If the gutters are clogged, they’ll overflow and let water spill onto the side and foundation of your home.

2. Check Windows & Doors

Unsealed windows and doors can also allow water to enter your home. Check the seals and caulking of these entry points, and reinforce them if needed. If you spot peeling, bubbling, or discolored paint nearby, you may already have a leak on your hands.

If you have trees near your home, examine them for disease or weakness. A compromised tree is more likely to break or even topple in storm winds, which can damage your home. In this case, you should look into removal.

Also, trim back any branches that are close to or touch the roof and siding. They can scrape against your home and may leave openings for rainwater to infiltrate.

4. Clear Drains of Debris

Drains direct water away from your home, but they need to be clear to work. Clean out the nearest storm drain too so water doesn’t flood onto your property.
