The holidays bring a lot of distractions, from more passengers in the car to late night parties, which can make driving a bit riskier. You might also share the road with irresponsible drivers, so be on high alert to avoid auto collisions. Here are a few tips to help you drive and arrive safely at holiday festivities.

3 Tips to Drive Safely During the Holidays

1. Put Your Cellphone Away

Using cellphones while driving is a major distraction, causing 1.6 million auto collisions each year. While holiday shopping, you might end up maneuvering through packed parking lots, but don’t be tempted to check your phone while waiting for a spot. Keep it on silent or stowed in the glove compartment. When you aren’t responding to phone calls and text messages, you’ll notice cars zipping in and out of spaces, aisles, and entrances so you can proceed with caution. Don’t take out your phone until you reach the destination.

2. Choose a Designated Driver

To avoid an auto collision or DUI arrest, ask a friend or relative to act as your designated driver. They will remain sober during the function, ensuring all passengers get back home safely.

If you can’t find a designated driver, make an Uber® or Lyft® reservation, so they can drop you off at the destination and pick you up after.

3. Schedule a Maintenance Check

If you plan to do any long-distance driving to visit friends and family who live out of town, ready your car for the journey. Schedule brake service to replace worn pads and tire rotation to avoid blowouts. Replace dirty oil to keep the engine from overheating and get nicks and cracks in the windshield fixed to avoid harsh glares that reduce visibility.
