Winter is officially here, and with it comes a variety of potential risks for your auto glass. Luckily, there are some preventative steps you can take to mitigate the need for windshield repair. This season, utilize the tips below to keep your car in top-quality condition.

4 Winter Care Tips to Prevent Windshield Repairs

1. Never Use Hot Water

It’s a common misconception that using hot water on icy windshields is safe. However, when the hot liquid hits the frozen glass, the sudden expansion from the heat may cause the glass to crack.

2. Utilize the Car’s Defroster

When you first start your car during the winter, turn on the defrosters for the front and rear windshield. This will gradually warm up the glass to break apart any ice. Because it occurs slowly, it’s less likely that the glass will break and require windshield repairs.

3. Use an Ice Scraper

Once it’s not as frozen, gently use the scraper to remove any buildup. Start from the top of the windshield and slowly work your way to the bottom.

4. Use Winter Windshield-Washer Fluid

Using regular windshield washer fluid on a cold day can lead to the liquid quickly freezing on the glass while you’re on the road. This can be very dangerous, as it decreases visibility. Instead, replace the fluid with a winter-variety with high levels of methanol to prevent ice and frost from forming.
