Burke Byer, the President and CEO of Byer Steel Recycling, recently appeared before Congress to testify about the current climate of the American steel mill industry. As part of a company who is a leader in the metal recycling and manufacturing world, Byer and his team are well versed in the market’s significant downturn, which poses a serious threat to the domestic steel market.

Byer Steel Recycling has successfully served the Midwest for 115 years. Yet, in the past three years, the market has changed drastically. Imported rebar from Turkey has been allowed to enter the market without regulation, and because of this, serious repercussions are being felt at Byer Steel Recycling and throughout the American metal manufacturing industry.

Imported products have always been a part of the country’s free market, offering prices around $40 to $60 below local sellers. Unfortunately, the current prices have dropped so much that they undercut domestic offerings by $200, and local companies are unable to keep up while remaining afloat.

The Byer Steel Recycling team is feeling the strain. Their client base is one-third of what it once was, and they’ve already had to lay off 30 employees. As a result of slashing prices to try to stay competitive, the once-profitable company is facing difficulty breaking even. The outlook is bleak, and Byer believes that if the conditions are not addressed, their business will fold.

For more than 100 years, the family-owned Byer Steel Recycling has proudly provided the very best quality metal recycling and manufacturing services throughout the Cincinnati, OH, community and the Midwest region.
