If you’re like many people, one of your New Year’s resolutions may be to make fitness a priority. Yet, while most individuals have no trouble setting this objective, following through can be challenging. However, there are some practical ways to keep up with your workout regimen, even as the calendar pages turn.

How to Keep Your New Year’s Fitness Resolutions

1. Set Specific, Manageable Goals

Simply saying you want to work out or lose weight is vague because it’s more challenging to measure and track. Instead, to make it more achievable, set smaller goals to hit along the way. For instance, make it your objective to work out four days per week all through January.

2. Build It Into Your Schedule

One of the main obstacles people experience when sticking to fitness goals is finding time in their schedule. Overcome this hurdle by building classes or gym sessions into your calendar as you would an important meeting. Start by block off an hour or so each day and do everything you can to avoid missing a workout.

3. Stay Accountable

workoutIt’s all too easy to hit snooze and skip the gym if you’re the only one going. To stay accountable, consider signing up for a group class, where you can make friends with fellow attendees who will expect to see you each week. Or, get a buddy to join with you and carpool to the gym.

4. Record Your Progress

It can take some time for the progress of your workouts to show. Instead of merely watching the scale, consider taking progress pictures or measurements. Or, gauge your progress by watching for improvements like better energy levels, clothes fitting differently, or quicker times when jogging or walking a mile.

5. Reward Yourself

Finally, give yourself small rewards after you hit each milestone. Whether it’s for hitting your desired exercise sessions or achieving a PR in a race, treat yourself with a new piece of workout gear, a manicure, or a night out to a restaurant with healthy menu options.
