When you have a septic system, most of its success depends on how it’s used daily. Assuming it’s installed correctly, it doesn’t require much septic maintenance beyond pumping to remove sludge every three to five years. However, knowing what can and cannot go down the drain and toilets is critical.

Do:

Discard grease in the trash.

When you’re washing the dishes, be selective about what goes down the kitchen sink. Scrape off as much grease, food remnants, and fat from the plate and throw them in the trash.

Although these particles are biodegradable, they take a long time to decompose in the tank. Removing them will help reduce septic pumping needs.

Reduce water consumption.

Too much water use results in elevated septic maintenance needs. It compromises the natural ratio of water to sludge, preventing beneficial bacteria from successfully breaking down the tank’s solid contents. It also places excess wear on the components. To avoid this, be mindful of your household’s water usage, repair any leaky faucets, and upgrade to low-flow fixtures.

septic maintenanceDon’t:

Throw kitty litter in the toilet.

Once your cat does their business, anything you scoop up must go into the trash can. Most kitty litter is clay-based, which means it clumps up quickly once it’s mixed with water. Not only can this clog the septic lines, but it can also build up in the tank.

To ensure the tank doesn’t get full prematurely, avoid flushing any litter.

Flush wipes.

Despite manufacturer claims, flushable wipes shouldn’t be flushed. Because their fabric is thicker than toilet paper, they take longer to break down. They also tend to clog the drains, since they contain cotton that may expand when wet. If you do use them, throw them in the trash.
