Dog flu, also known as canine influenza, can affect any breed of dog and is highly contagious. Anywhere dogs congregate—kennels, shelters, dog parks, and indoor training schools—can host infectious diseases. Pet vaccines offer protection from infection. Although they may not prevent illness, they may reduce the severity of symptoms. Here’s what you need to know about pet care for canine influenza.

A Guide to Dog Flu

There are two strains of canine influenza: H3N2 and H3N8. Both are extremely contagious and are a year-round threat. Dogs get the flu when they come in contact with infected animals. There are documented cases in most U.S. states every year.

Symptoms

Dogs will exhibit symptoms two to three days after exposure to the virus. Symptoms, which include wet or dry cough, discharge from the eyes or nose, sneezing, loss of appetite, lethargy, and mild fever, usually last between 10 and 21 days.

Dogs with weakened immune systems, such as puppies, geriatric dogs, and canines with complex medical histories or those requiring specialized pet care treatments, may develop symptoms that advance to more serious illnesses. Some dogs with flu, for example, develop pneumonia, which inflames the lungs and causes breathing difficulty.

Vaccinationspet care

The principal benefit of vaccination is controlling the spread of dog flu. Limiting transmission should be the particular concern of pet owners whose dogs often share leashes, food, water bowls, and toys.

Puppies as young as seven weeks can be given a vaccination for flu. Dogs with medical conditions should receive the shot as soon as exposure to dogs that may be infected is imminent. Administration of the vaccine at least two weeks prior to exposure is ideal.

Transmission

Respiratory secretions—saliva and mucus—carry the virus from dog to dog when breathing, barking, and sniffing. Humans who handle dogs can also carry the virus on clothing and hands for up to 24 hours, increasing the likelihood of your dog contracting the flu without a preventative vaccination.
