Just like residential homes, industrial water systems are susceptible to varying potential hydrogen (pH) levels. This is a measurement of the concentration of hydrogen ions present in the water. The higher the concentration, the more acidic the water is; the lower the amount present, the more basic it becomes. Both have different effects on industrial plumbing, as described below.

Why pH Levels Matter to Industrial Water Systems

The main reason water becomes acidic is because minerals like cadmium and manganese are leached from the environment surrounding the primary water source. When this happens, the water becomes corrosive and eats away at industrial pipes and seals, which, in turn, results in more metals like lead, copper, and zinc contaminating the water. If no water treatment strategies are taken, the acidic water continues to erode pipes and leads to rust.

Basic water, however, is caused by a higher presence of calcium and magnesium, and while not as dangerous as acidic water, it poses its own threats to industrial equipment. The main problem is limescale buildup, which loosens washers and seals, contributing to leaks. It can also accumulate in pipes, causing clogs that lead to overheating.

How to Protect Your Water Systems

Water SystemBecause of the damage pH imbalances cause, it’s important to have a water management specialist test the levels regularly to ensure you are in the safe zone. They will also let you know what type of water treatment is best to correct any issues.

Basic water can be treated with water softeners to prevent the damage that it causes. Plastic plumbing, such as PEX and CPVC, are not affected by the harmful side effects of acidic water. However, you can also treat pHs lower than 7 by installing a calcite acid neutralizer tank that uses marble limestone to neutralize the contaminants and keep your equipment protected.
