If you live in an area prone to rainstorms, you’ll want to ensure the weather doesn’t damage your pool or contaminate your water. While you can call your local pool service after the storm for maintenance, you can also take steps beforehand to prevent any costly damages.

5 Tips to Protect Your Pool From Rain

1. Shock Your Pool

Heavy rainfall can dilute the chlorine levels in your pool. To keep the chlorine levels balanced, give your pool a shock treatment before the storm is scheduled to hit. You can also arrange for a pool service to assess the chlorine levels and determine if an extra shock treatment is necessary.

2. Don’t Drain the Pool Completely

Pool serviceYou might be tempted to drain your pool to prevent contamination from the storm. But draining your pool will leave the walls and floor unprotected from flying debris. If you’re expecting excessive rainfall and you don’t have overflows installed in your pool, drain a foot of water at most.

3. Clean Up Around Your Pool

In case of high winds, pack away toys, poolside furniture, and any other items that could fly into your pool and cause damage. Store them in a garage or shed to keep them dry.

4. Turn the Power Off

Turn off the electrical and gas lines that power the pool to prevent any water damage to the system. You can also invest in a plastic cover for an extra layer of protection. If your system runs on a timer, make sure it won’t turn the pump or filter on in the middle of the storm.

5. Trim Branches

Dead or overgrown branches can break in the middle of an aggressive storm and fall into your pool. Before the rainy season starts, trim the trees around your pool and home.
