Colliding with an animal while driving can be dangerous and upsetting. In addition to damaging your vehicle, the accident many also harm the animal. Fortunately, collision repair can restore your vehicle to its prior state if you experience such an accident. However, you can limit the likelihood of hitting wild animals by adhering to a few simple tips.

What Are Some Ways to Avoid Wildlife Collisions?

Animals like deer and bears can make their way into oncoming traffic, especially in rural areas. While it may not always be possible to avoid a collision, here are some ways to significantly reduce your odds:

  • Know Their Active Times: Animals like deer are most likely to be active at dawn and dusk. During these times, be sure to watch for nearby animals. Keep your eyes on the road, but scan the upcoming landscape when possible to look out for wildlife.
  • Use Your Horn: If you see an animal near the road, beep at them. The noise will not only alert the animal to stay away, but also get the attention of nearby motorists. Honking could thus prevent a collision, either with your vehicle or someone else’s.
  • Slow Down or Stop: If an animal is approaching, slow down or stop, if possible. Even if you collide with the animal, the damage can be minimized at a reduced speed. Be sure to hit the brakes without swerving, which could cause a more severe accident.

What Should You Do if You Hit a Deer?

collision repairIf you hit a deer or other large wildlife while driving, pull to the side of the road and call for assistance. Stay in your vehicle, as an injured animal could be dangerous. Use your flashers to alert other drivers of your location. Once the authorities arrive, they may move the animal or transport it elsewhere. You should also take pictures of the damage to your vehicle and request an accident report if it’s required by your insurance company. If the damage is significant, you may also need to have your vehicle towed to a repair shop.

Once your vehicle is safely away from the scene, contact your insurance company to pursue collision repair. It’s important to have any collision repairs performed by a trusted shop, as the damage may require specialized tools to be fixed.
