Modern office chairs feature ergonomic support, rolling wheels, and numerous style options to suit the needs of any business. However, early chairs were significantly simpler and less comfortable. Here’s how these seats have evolved over the years and become the staple they are today.

Humble Beginnings to Now

Based on drawings and sculptures, historians believe the ancient Egyptians created and used the first working chairs as far back as 1900 B.C. For example, artisans used crude, stool-like seats when painting and drawing.

Fast-forward to the 1840s when Charles Darwin added cast-iron bed legs on casters to his lab chair to help him switch between his specimens. A cushioned, upholstered, and adjustable model was a hit at the world’s fair in 1851.

Chairs weren’t designed with ergonomics in mind until around WW I as women entered the factories to replace the taller men. The invention of height adjustable work stools helped productivity and became a standard concept.  Along with the typewriter came the steno chair with an adjustable back.  In 1951, fiberglass and plastic chairs in bold colors and set on casters became widespread and molding technology allowed designers to do new things. Through the 2000s, upgraded office chairs have focused on comfort, health, and productivity with adjustable arms, mesh upholsteries and unlimited adjustability features.

The Future of Office Chairs

office chairsAs workers become more mobile in their professions, office furniture must adapt to remain functional and relevant. Chairs at work must be comfortable, inexpensive, and supportive to compete with standing desks and other innovative pieces.

As a result, manufacturers have produced a variety of sizes, styles, and features to fit almost any situation and budget. Innovations include significant back and arm support, recliners with tension adjustment, and better back support. As the science of ergonomics became better understood, designs of the commercial chair strived to be healthier for us to use.
