Clogged sinks are one of the most common plumbing problems homeowners face. While it may seem like just a temporary inconvenience, repeated drainage issues can result in costly damages. As such, it’s important to make sure clogs are handled correctly to prevent future occurrences. In most cases, you should enlist a professional plumber to help clear up any blockages. Here’s an overview of how to get the water flowing down your sink again.

What to Do About a Clogged Sink

1. Use a Plunger

Before calling a plumbing expert, try plunging the sink drain. If it’s a minor clog, this may be enough to loosen it and resolve the problem. Submerge the plunger underneath the water in the sink and position it carefully over the drain to create a seal. Once you feel it suction, begin pumping up and down in a vertical motion. Do this several times and then remove the plunger to see if the water goes down the drain. If it doesn’t work right away, repeat the process once or twice more and then move on.

2. Clean the P-Trap

plumbingUnderneath your sink is a curved pipe referred to as the P-trap. It’s meant to catch debris to prevent blockages in the waste line, but sometimes, it becomes clogged and needs to be cleaned. A plumber can disassemble the pipe to inspect what’s inside and clear it out. After it’s been thoroughly cleaned of all grime and residue, it will be rinsed and reconnected. This is a messy job, and if the pipe isn’t reinstalled properly, a leak can occur. Thus, it’s better to have a plumber take care of it.

3. Snake the Drain

For particularly tough clogs that appear to be further down in the pipe, the drain may need to be snaked. It’s essential to do this correctly, or the debris can accidentally be pushed back even more. Plumbing professionals carry this tool, which is a coiled spiral cable, and know just how much pressure to apply to dislodge the blockage and pull it out.
