Your home windows can last for many years but, like any feature, they'll deteriorate over time. While they give you a glimpse outside, they're also exposed to those elements every day, and many problems can develop when they've reached the end of their lifespan. For example, they may let moisture into your home, resulting in water damage to the windows and surrounding areas. Review the signs of damage below to determine if it's time to replace your old windows.

How to Tell Your Home Windows Are Water Damaged

1. Damaged Drywall

Drywall isn't designed to get wet. When it does, it softens and starts to warp, resulting in sagging, buckling, and general deterioration.

Touch the drywall around your window with gentle pressure. If it feels soggy or is visibly sagging, then it's saturated with moisture. In addition to replacing the window, the drywall will need to be replaced.

2. Discoloration

3. Mildew & Mold

To survive, mold and mildew need organic materials to consume, water, and light. This makes your window a prime location for mold growth if there's moisture on the inside. After all, the drywall and wood around it are organic materials, and there's a lot of natural light.

Mold and mildew are usually green, black, or gray in appearance, though mold can also be pink or yellow. Bleach will kill the spores, but you'll have to replace the window to remove the source of moisture and prevent future growth.
