You should never see water pooling in any area of your yard, even after a rainstorm. Standing water could cause problems ranging from insect infestations to foundation damage. Some simple drainage solutions will remove the standing water and prevent any future pools from forming.

3 Drainage Solutions for Standing Water

1. Adjust Downspouts

It’s common for the plant beds underneath a downspout to accumulate water. A flower bed will catch everything coming out of the downspout, creating a puddle. Extend the spout so it flows past the flower bed and onto the lawn.

2. Install a French Drain

If you have a low spot that’s proven to be a trouble area, you can install a French drain. This is a gravel-filled trench that slopes down toward an area where you want to dispose of the water. A perforated pipe in the gravel will allow the water to trickle down, where it will be moved quickly to the exit point. Popular exit points include storm drains, creeks, or dry wells.

3. Change Your Soil

Some soils do not absorb water very well, such as clay-like and compacted. This leaves all your water on the surface rather than allowing it to filter down. Your landscaper can amend your soil with an organic matter or till up the soil to make it less compacted and pull up the subsoil. They’ll then mix in organic mulches such as bark and wood chips to improve drainage.
