Your child’s vision may need correction to make reading, seeing the board in class, watching movies, completing homework, and playing sports easier. The right prescription will not only improve their vision but also help with other issues such as lazy eye (also known as amblyopia). Here’s what you should know about the signs an eye exam for your little one is needed.

5 Reason to Schedule an Eye Exam for Your Child

1. Squinting

Perhaps your child has started squinting to see objects in the distance or their teacher reports they always squint to see the chalkboard. Squinting is an indication of nearsightedness, or the inability to see things far away. A prescription for eyeglasses is needed if your child is nearsighted.

2. Excessive Rubbing

When your child struggles to see clearly, it stresses and strains the eyes. A young one may rub their eyes because of vision fatigue. Since rubbing may scratch the eyes if foreign particles are present, schedule an eye exam if you notice excessive rubbing, which may also signal an infection, such as conjunctivitis (pink eye).

3. Sitting Too Close to the Television

4. Headaches

Eye strain may cause headaches. Children who complain of headaches after school have likely been squinting and straining to see for hours. If your child has trouble completing homework assignments or in-class work because of eye-related pain, schedule an eye exam.

5. Covering One Eye

When your child consistently covers one eye to improve their sight, they’re trying to adjust for blurry vision by looking at a distant object with their “good eye.” If a child frequently tilts their head or closes one eye to accommodate a vision issue, see an optometrist to have their vision checked.
