Winter weather is already knocking on the door, so it’s time to get ready for heavy snows and treacherous ice. Being prepared for inclement weather and getting what you need from the hardware store beforehand can make the difference in how safe your property will be. Here are a few essential tips to remember.

How to Tackle Snow Shoveling & Icy Conditions

1. Apply Ice Melt

There are a few types of ice melt products found in hardware stores. Rock salt is effective until about 15 degrees Fahrenheit, but it can damage vegetation nearby and get into concrete, asphalt, or your pet’s paws.

Another effective option for below-freezing weather is calcium chloride pellets, but to protect your lawn, try applying sand to add traction. Finally, urea is a fertilizer that will melt ice without causing damage.

2. Stay Ahead

If you know a storm is coming, apply a thin layer of ice melt beforehand so that ice and snow don’t accumulate too quickly or densely. During the storm, add another layer. For large weather systems, especially those that lead to several inches, adding salt or sand after the storm has passed may not be as effective in clearing the area.

3. Shovel the Walkway

hardwareAfter the storm is over, it’s time to clear your walkways. The more traffic over them, the more compacted the snow will become.

Shovel snow away from the path so that during melting, it doesn’t seep back onto the area and freeze. For packed snow or ice, use an ice chipper.

4. Warm Up

Before beginning, warm up and stretch your muscles, especially if you’re not used to such heavy lifting and movement. Dress in layers so you can adjust your body temperature as you work, and remember to take breaks if you feel fatigued, dizzy, or in pain. Bend at the knees, lift with your legs, and switch your grip to relieve your arms and hands.

5. Remove Shoes

Don’t forget to take your boots or shoes off before entering your home. Tracking salt or sand inside can scrape up flooring and leave behind a big mess. Keeping shoes off will also help prevent slips and falls, but keep a mop or some old towels nearby just in case.
