There’s nothing like traveling in a motorhome. You get to see the world while enjoying plenty of private space and many of the amenities you’d have at your home. As durable as your motorhome may be, it is essential to know what could cause it to break down and require towing

3 Common Reasons Motorhomes Break Down

1. Dead Battery

Motorhomes have two batteries – a 12-volt leisure one is used to power the appliances inside, plus a more powerful one under the hood that keeps the vehicle mobile. It’s easy to let batteries drain by accident, as motorhomes often remain parked for months, or sometimes years, between trips. It’s best to start your motorhome every few weeks, even if only for twenty minutes, to keep the batteries charged.

2. Engine Problems

towingA motorhome’s engine may be powerful to move the vehicle down the road, but it isn’t invincible. One common engine issue occurs when small oil leaks are unnoticed, or old oil is left in too long. This can lead to the engine overheating.

Another common issue occurs when fan belts become dry from too much inactivity, causing them to break and halt the movement of engine components. Change the oil every 3,000 miles and let the engine (and belt) run every few weeks to avoid these problems.

3. Body Damage

Even if your motorhome is built to be durable, it is bound to encounter water damage from rainfall, dew, and splashes while in motion. If it isn’t dried off, the water could compromise the body. This leads to the engine, electronics, and axles becoming vulnerable to the elements and debris, which increases the risk of damage – and increases the risk you’ll need a towing company to tow or haul your motorhome.
