Whether you own a new or used vehicle, all car owners should prepare for the cold season. Doing some early maintenance will prevent issues when the temperatures drop, keeping you safe no matter the weather. Here are a few tips for keeping your car in top shape this winter.

5 Tips for Getting Your Vehicle Winter-Ready

1. Swap the Air Filters

When cold weather arrives, you’ll need to turn up the heat. Make sure a mechanic changes the air filters to promote good air quality all season long. Swapping these screens will keep out pollution, dust, hair, and dander, mitigating respiratory issues.

2. Change the Windshield Wipers

used vehicleWindshield wipers feature rubber sleeves that move debris and precipitation off the glass. Manufacturers recommend swapping the blades every three months, so install new ones with the start of every season.

3. Top off the Antifreeze

Antifreeze or coolant contains propylene or ethylene glycol. This mixture flows through vehicle radiators to prevent the engines from freezing or overheating. Top off the antifreeze in the late fall to protect the car from low temperatures.

4. Assess the Tire Treads

Vehicle owners should assess their tires before the winter to prepare for slippery roads. Insert a penny into the deepest part of the tire with Abraham Lincoln’s head facing the center of the tire. If you can see the top of his head when looking at the coin from a 90-degree angle, it’s time for new tires. All vehicles must have ample traction to provide steering control on wet, slippery roads.

5. Test the Battery

During the colder months, many cars experience issues with their batteries. Use a multimeter or visit a service center to ensure this power source has 12.6 volts or above. Without proper power, the car may not start, potentially leaving you stranded in the cold.
