When downsizing, you need to decide what’s worth keeping. Fortunately, you don’t have to give up all of your clothes if you invest in a self-storage unit. But before you pack everything away, learn how to store them properly so they’re still in good shape when you come to collect them.

Do:

Get climate-controlled storage.

Clothes should be kept at a consistent temperature, so choose a climate-controlled storage unit. Humid conditions can lead to mold or mildew growth, which will deteriorate fabric.

Wash your clothes.

self-storageProperly launder or dry-clean all the items you plan to store. Even if your clothes are free of visible stains, the invisible ones caused by sweat, oils, and lotions will attract mold or even pests.

Invest in cedar.

Mothballs smell unpleasant, and long-term exposure to their toxic fumes can be hazardous. Cedar provides the same level of bug repellent without the health risks. Plus, it comes in different forms: chips can be thrown in with clothes, or blocks can be put in a corner.

Don’t:

Use vacuum-sealed bags.

Vacuum sealed bags save space, but there’s a catch: fabric needs to breathe, and removing the air can accelerate deterioration and leave permanent creases. Cardboard boxes are also not recommended since they can attract pests. Plastic bins with clip-on covers are the best option.

Use metal hangers.

For any clothes that need hanging, avoid metal hangers, which can stretch clothes and rust in humid temperatures. Their sharp edges may tear fabric as well. Stick with wooden or plastic hangers instead.

Forget about your clothes.

After leaving the clothes in a storage unit, check on their condition once a month or so. Look out for any problems like mildew, pest droppings, and chewed fabric so you can take counteracting measures. Also, refold the clothes to minimize permanent creasing.
