Getting a DOT physical can be a nerve wracking experience, especially if you have never gone for one before. As of 2014, anyone who holds a CDL or is applying for a CDL will require a DOT physical which can only be performed by a Certified Medical Examiner under the FMCSA. Be aware that DOT physicals are different than check ups and work physicals and only doctors that have been certified can do these exams. Some states and some companies will require a DOT physical if you are driving with a Class E license or just for safety standards.

Your DOT physical will check on your current health status and also your past medical history. Your paperwork will have you list past surgeries, current medications, any medical conditions, hospital stays, and other relevant medical information about yourself.

You will be required to provide a urine sample to check on kidney and bladder function. This test is also used to detect glucose in urine, which could be an indicator of diabetes. This is not a drug test.

The doctor will take vitals like height and weight, check your blood pressure, test your vision and hearing, listen to your heart and lungs, look in your ears and eyes, and check your spine and extremities for abnormalities that would affect driving. Other tests may be included depending on the doctors findings.

For healthy drivers with minimal to no health issues the maximum length of certification is 2 years. In some instances, drivers are awarded shorter certifications like 1 year due to things like diabetes, high blood pressure and others.

Make sure to bring a list of medications and any notes from your doctors. If you require glasses, contacts, or hearing aids, please bring them.
