Time and mileage also play a factor in the certification process. While the mechanic might find the car in excellent condition during the inspection, it may not qualify as a certified pre-owned vehicle. The car’s manufacturer accounts not only for the state of the car but also its age and mileage. 

While each automaker has different guidelines, most CPOs are no more than seven-years-old and have a maximum of 80,000 miles.

How Are Certified Pre-Owned Cars Different From Used Cars?

Every certified pre-owned car is a used car, but not every used car is certified pre-owned. While they go through the same process, CPOs offer different features. 

Certified pre-owned vehicles have their factory warranties extended. They’re also given a limited bumper-to-bumper warranty, which covers repairs. This amenity is usually provided only for new cars. While used cars are given the same in-depth inspection and repairs, the buyer pays for the inspection rather than the dealer or manufacturer. In some cases, the buyer also pays for the repairs.

CPOs also have perks that new and used cars don’t have. The perks depend on the manufacturer. They might include 24-hour roadside service, free or reduced-price oil changes, or a free trial subscription for satellite radio.
