When you want to start a new home remodeling project, it can be challenging to find a contractor you trust. Fortunately, by doing your due diligence, you can narrow down your options. Here are a few questions to ask a home remodeler before starting a project.

What to Ask a Home Remodeler

Have you done projects like mine before?

Before you start working with anyone, ask them if they have handled projects like yours before. Request previous examples of their work, and check the web for reviews of those jobs. If, for example, most of their projects are commercial, they may not be the right fit. Also, if you want to remodel a kitchen, but they mostly focus on bathrooms, go with another contractor.

What timeline should I expect?

home remodelingCome up with a personal timeline, and ask each contractor if they can complete the project within that timeframe. Ask what variables are included in the project, so you can plan for issues that may pop up along the way. For example, if the contractor will need to work with a plumber, the timeframe may depend on the plumbing professional they use. Also, ask how long projects like yours typically take and how frequently they finish projects on schedule. Next, head to some review sites, and check if clients have complained about their timeliness.

How will you protect my home and yard?

Ask them how they will keep your home protected, and whether they work with their own employees or sub-contractors, as well. If they work with the latter, they may not know them well, increasing the risk of security issues. Ask what steps they take to protect every aspect of your home, including your landscaping. Make sure they know which areas they can and can’t put equipment or trash.
