Ice dams are ridges of frozen water that form at the edge of a roof and stop water from running off, which may cause damage. Fortunately, there are steps you can take by yourself or with the help of a professional roofer to prevent the issue. Below is your guide to ice dams.

Causes

When you have snow on your roof, heat from your home can warm the roof enough to cause a layer at the bottom of the snow to melt. Melted water then runs down and refreezes at the eave where the roof isn’t as warm. This ice builds up and prevents other water from running off. Blocked guttering is also a cause of ice dams because it provides a platform for the ice to collect on.

Damage

When an ice dam prevents meltwater from running off, the water gets backed up and sits on the roof. It will begin to seep through the shingles, potentially getting into the insulation, attic, and ceilings within your home. Permanently moist conditions may also lead to rotting and mildew. Another problem is that when the ice dam breaks off, it can tear tiles and may land on people or property below.

Addressing the Issue

rooferIf you see icicles or a bulge of ice at the edge of your roof, you probably have an ice dam. The ice should be broken up with a blunt tool and melted using a calcium chloride ice melter. Going up onto the roof to deal with the problem is dangerous, and the ice might take shingles with it when it’s removed. Call a professional roofer if you’re not confident about tackling an ice dam.

Prevention

Because ice dams are caused by heat leaking up through your home, you need to block the heat off. Ensure there’s plenty of ventilation underneath the roof, and seal holes and improve insulation in the attic floor. Regularly removing snow and ice from the roof and gutters will help, but this must be done safely. There are plenty of ways a roofer can prevent ice dams, including installing de-icing cables or replacing shingles around the eave with a metal drip edge.
