Backyard ponds make beautiful centerpieces to any outdoor space, but they require a little extra maintenance when winter arrives. While the pond walls and the fish can usually handle a deep freeze, ice can seriously damage the pump and other equipment that keeps the pond healthy. If you’re expecting cold weather this season, follow the tips below to protect your special water feature.

How to Winterize Your Pond

1. Clean or Remove the Pump

If your water feature is relatively deep, running the pump throughout the winter can keep it from freezing solid and might result in some beautiful ice formations. Cleaning accumulated debris out of the filter and pump keeps water flowing smoothly throughout the cold months ahead. However, if your backyard pond usually freezes solid, the wise approach is to remove the pump and filter and store the assembly somewhere warm.

2. Keep Out Debris

3. Take Out the Vulnerable Plants

Water lilies, lotus flowers, and other aquatic plants make your backyard pond into a gorgeous oasis, but some of them don’t stand up well to winter weather. Before temperatures drop, take the pots out of the pond, remove any dead foliage, and store the plants in an unheated garage or basement.
