If you’ve noticed a problem with your tire, consult an auto shop for tire repair or replacement to stay safe. If you need one of these services, you may wonder what makes a tire salvageable or not. Here are three instances in which a professional will be unable to fix your tire and instruct you to replace it.

How to Know Whether to Replace or Repair a Tire

1. Location & Size of Puncture

If the sidewall or the shoulder of a tire becomes damaged, the tire cannot be repaired. The sidewall is the smooth area around the side of the tire, while the shoulder is the outermost layer of the tread. Both areas come under extreme pressure while you drive, so a repair is unlikely to last and could result in a blowout.

Even in areas where a tire repair would hold, the size of the puncture will dictate whether you need a replacement instead. A tire with a hole more than a ¼-inch in diameter should be replaced.

2. Collision Damage

You must immediately replace any tire damaged in a collision, especially if you see bulges, large gashes, tread separation, or your tire was knocked off the rim on impact. Even if there’s no visible damage, it’s safest to have it checked as there could be issues under the surface.

3. Tread Depth

Do the penny/nickel test to determine whether you have enough tread left on your tire to make a repair worth it. Place a penny in the tread with Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can see all of his head, you should replace your tire.

If the top of Lincoln’s head was covered, insert a nickel into the same groove and observe Jefferson’s head. If you can see the whole of his head, the tire may not be safe in wet weather. In this case, consider whether you want a repair or a replacement to stay safe.
