For many homeowners, turning on the furnace for the first time is a true sign that winter has arrived. Since you rely on the heating system to keep you comfortable throughout the colder months, you need it to work as reliably and efficiently as possible. The guide below highlights a few heating service tips to ensure your system is ready.

3 Tips for Prepping Your Heater for Cold Weather

1. Program the Thermostat

Give your thermostat a fresh set of batteries so it doesn’t run out and leave you without heat. If you don’t have a programmable model, consider replacing your current one. For maximum comfort and efficiency, program it to 68 degrees Fahrenheit while you’re home and awake, and lower it by 10 degrees when you’re asleep or out of the house. You can set programmable thermostats to change temperatures 30 minutes before you want a desired level reached. For example, program it to drop to 58 degrees 30 minutes before bed, and to kick on and up again 30 minutes before you wake up.

2. Schedule a Heating Service

This includes cleaning the heat exchanger, lubricating the blower motor, changing the air filter, and looking for any wearing parts. They’ll find any issues and fix them before they grow worse and cause more severe issues. They’ll also make sure your system is running as efficiently as possible, which can help you save on energy bills throughout the season.

3. Seal & Insulate Ducts

If you have central air, older ducts can be a serious issue. In the average house, about 20 to 30% of heated air is lost through leaks, holes, or poorly connected ducts before they even reach the vents. Prevent this by having a professional look for any holes in your ducts and sealing them. You should also have any ducts in unconditioned areas insulated so the heat isn’t lost through the sealed duct.
