Septic systems rely on bacteria, which survive by converting organic materials into energy. Once waste is broken down in the septic tank, it’s sent to the leach field. Systems are either aerobic, which contains oxygen-reliant bacteria, or anaerobic, meaning the bacteria do not consume oxygen. Most systems are anaerobic because they’re inexpensive compared to a three-tank aerobic system. No matter what type a homeowner has, however, the balance of bacteria must be maintained. The following items may disrupt this harmony and cause major issues to the septic tank.

3 Items to Keep Out of Your Septic System

1. Food Items

There’s a reason garbage disposals shorten the life span of septic tanks—many foods are harmful to the system. Bacteria require soft, small particles to work efficiently. They typically break down waste within a 24-hour cycle, and large or tough food items take much longer to handle, which slows the bacteria’s ability to process properly.

Softer foods, such as bananas and oranges, are fine in moderation, but coffee grounds, grease, and oils can back up the system to the point of the sewage returning to the home.

2. Cleaners & Chemicals

Septic SystemsCleaners, especially those containing bleach and disinfectants, are created to kill bacteria, so introducing them to the septic tank will prohibit the production of additional bacteria. Look for biodegradable and organic options designed specifically for septic tanks.

Be careful with chemicals like paint thinner and prescription medication, too, as many of these will kill bacteria quickly. To be safe, avoid allowing any chemical substance to enter your plumbing.

3. Bathroom Items

The toilet is an easy way to get rid of objects, but these items will float in the septic tank until it’s cleaned out. Tampons, kitty litter, cigarette butts, and any other object that isn’t human waste or toilet paper should stay away from the toilet. When shopping for toilet paper, look for biodegradable options or those labeled “septic safe” on the packaging.
