It's not uncommon for kids to fight their parents on brushing their teeth. Not only is it usually followed by a boring task like going to school or bed, but the act itself can also feel like a chore. Since brushing at least twice a day is the foundation of good dental hygiene, though, this is one battle where you’ll have to put your foot down. Thankfully, if you find ways to make brushing fun, there won’t be any conflict at all.

How to Get Your Kids to Enjoy Brushing Their Teeth

1. Let Them Choose Their Tools

Children like believing they have some sense of autonomy. That's why asking if they want broccoli or carrots instead of asking if they want vegetables is a sound strategy for getting them to eat well. When they think the choice is up to them, they're more inclined to follow through.

Apply this same strategy to brushing. Let your kids pick out their own toothbrush cups, brushes, and toothpaste. They may even beg you to use them as soon as you get home from the store.

2. Make a Game of It

You can even pick an upbeat song to serve as “monster music” and play it every time they brush. Turning brushing into a fun ritual instead of a boring chore will ensure your kids never skip it.

3. Devise a Reward System

For kids who are especially stubborn, it may be necessary to implement a reward system. For example, place small stickers on a calendar every time your children brush to track their progress. If your kids brush for a week straight without being told, offer a small reward. If they brush for a month straight, offer a bigger reward. Eventually, brushing will become part of their normal routine, and they won't need to be reminded at all.
