When the weather is extreme, you rely on your HVAC equipment to make your home livable. However, are you and your HVAC contractor doing everything possible to protect your investment and keep it running well? To keep your unit in pristine condition, use the following maintenance advice.

3 Tips to Take Care of Your HVAC System

1. Use Fans

After extended use, it’s not uncommon for your heating and AC unit to tire out, resulting in broken or worn-out parts and higher energy bills. To avoid exorbitant expenses and sudden breakdowns, focus on preventing strain. For example, use ceiling fans to circulate the air the system produces, so you can keep the thermostat a few degrees lower. This takes some of the workload off of the HVAC system, helping it last longer and work more efficiently.

2. Clean the Filter Regularly

HVAC contractorThe filter in your unit is responsible for capturing airborne contaminants, such as dust, dirt, pollen, and dander. As it fills up, it may begin to block airflow, sending the particles back into circulation or straining your HVAC system. Therefore, clean or replace your air filter at least every three months—monthly if you have pets that shed.

3. Check the Outdoor Unit

The outdoor unit is just as essential to heating and cooling your living space as the interior pieces. Unfortunately, organic debris such as twigs, leaves, and tree nuts can fall into this metal box and get caught in the fan blades or cause other damage. To prevent a repair visit from an HVAC contractor, trim back trees and bushes hanging over or near the unit, and check on it whenever you go outside.
