It can be extremely stressful to get into a car accident. Unfortunately, these wrecks happen more often than they should. However, there are some preventative measures that you can take to decrease the chances of an accident. Practice the following safe driving tips to avoid collisions with other vehicles and decrease the need for auto repairs

How to Avoid Car Accidents

1. Don’t Rush

It can be tempting to cut corners in your driving when you’re running late or in a hurry to get somewhere. However, this mad rush increases the likelihood of a car accident. Try to leave a bit earlier in the morning and take your journey slowly, especially when you pull into traffic or move through intersections. Remain aware of your blind spots and look more than once before you pull out onto a busy road. Wait at least three seconds to avoid encountering red light-runners in intersections.

2. Plan Ahead

Not only should you be aware of all the traffic and weather conditions around you in the present moment, but you should also be thinking about where your car will be in the next 12 seconds. By thinking about where your car will be on the road in the very near future, you may be able to avoid cars that suddenly swerve into your lane and other unexpected obstacles. Thinking ahead also includes leaving a three-second space between you and the car in front of you to avoid tailgating, which is a major cause of accidents.

3. Avoid Distractions

This includes talking on your cellphone, eating, and changing the music on the radio. Make sure to pull off to the side of the road and park your car to avoid a collision and the need for auto repairs. Before you get into the car, ensure that you are well-rested and completely sober.

4. Keep Your Car Well-Maintained

Regular visits to your auto repair shop can help you avoid vehicle malfunctions that may lead to accidents. Have the oil changed regularly, and make sure your tires are properly inflated to avoid blowouts. You should also have an auto repair professional run thorough diagnostics on your vehicle every six months or so to catch any larger problems early on.
