In the middle of winter, the last thing you want is for your furnace to fail. Fortunately, most systems show several signals that something isn’t right long before they breakdown. Catching these signs early will allow you to have repairs made or replacements scheduled so you don’t have to live without heat.

How to Tell If Your Furnace Needs Repairs

1. There’s an Unusual Amount of Dust on Vents

furnace-Cornelia-GAIt’s normal for recently installed HVAC systems or those in an ongoing construction area to emit dust. However, you should change the air filter and clean the ductwork if neither of these situations is the case or dust keeps appearing. If this doesn’t put an end to the dust, call a technician to clean the system’s burners, ignition, and safety devices before the buildup can cause parts to fail or allow carbon monoxide to back up into the home.

2. It’s Aging

The expected lifespan of most furnaces is between 15 and 20 years. Once yours reaches this point, it’s only a matter of time before it has to be replaced. If you’ve noticed an increase in repairs, consider upgrading the unit before it fails.

3. The Pilot Light Is Yellow

If your furnace includes a standing pilot light, check it at the start of each heating season. Normally, the flame should appear bright blue or bluish-green. If it is a weak, yellow color, it typically means the air intake valve is clogged; this causes incomplete combustion. Have the furnace cleaned immediately by a professional; otherwise, the pilot light will keep shutting off, and carbon monoxide will continue to escape into your home.
