Few things are as cozy and comforting as enjoying a steaming hot cup of tea at your favorite cafe. And while there are numerous ways you can craft the perfect mug, there are a few tried-and-true tips to make the most of your brew. The next time you order a cup or a pot, try some of the methods listed below.

3 Tips for Creating the Perfect Cup of Tea

1. Base the Steeping Time Off the Type of Tea

To an extent, the amount of steeping time depends on your personal preference for how strong or light you like your tea. However, it’s been proven there are optimal periods depending on the brew in question. Following these time restrictions will allow you to get the densest and most enjoyable flavor profile out of your leave. For example, green tea should only steep for a minute and a half, whereas white tea should sit for four minutes.

2. Use Fresh Water

cafeIf the water in your kettle isn’t fresh, your tea will be tainted with a stale taste. If you can, opt for purified water. If not, ask the cafe to make sure it’s at least fresh from the tap and hasn’t been sitting out for a while.

3. Start Drinking at the Right Time

Like steeping, there’s an optimal period for when you start drinking your tea. Drink it too quickly and it will be too hot to enjoy. Conversely, if you drink it too late, the water will have cooled to the point where it’s no longer tasty. For the best experience, wait for precisely six minutes, at which point your tea will have cooled to roughly 140 degrees Fahrenheit and will be the most enjoyable.
