A cross between a bike and a motorcycle, an electric moped offers an efficient, cost-effective transportation option. If you recently purchased a moped and have no prior experience riding this low-motor, two-wheeled vehicle, review what you need to know here to stay safe on the road and maintain your new investment.

Riding Tips

Start your transportation journey by learning how to stop. Keep the motor off and use the pedals to slowly ride down your driveway or another gently sloped terrain. Lean on your dominant foot when you stop so you don’t tip over.

Once you’re used to operating the handle and foot brakes, start riding in a straight line down a low-traffic street. Accelerate since driving too slowly will make you tip over. Engage your abdominal muscles to avoid getting off-balance.

electric mopedPractice slow turns as your comfort level increases. Eventually graduate to rougher terrain such as dirt roads, and practice stopping while turning.

Ride in bad weather or on uneven surfaces only when you feel experienced enough to navigate safely.

Safety Tips

Always wear a snug-fitting helmet before riding your electric moped. Wear bright clothing and add reflective decals to your moped to stay visible to other motorists.

Follow the rules of the road. Use your turn signals or hand, look behind you before turning to check your blind spot, and never weave among cars and trucks to get ahead of traffic.

It’s also a good idea to check your area’s moped and scooter laws to avoid tickets.

Maintenance Tips

Keep your electric moped in excellent condition by performing many of the same maintenance tasks cars require.

  • Wash and wax the two-wheeler to avoid premature paint fading and chipping.
  • Check the tire pressure and tread often.
  • Replace your brake pads once they get below 1.5 mm.
  • Replace the air filter at least once a year to keep your motor relatively clean.
  • Clean the spark plug often with a metal brush, and change it every 300 to 600 miles.
