The engine is what powers your vehicle, and if it’s not running properly, it can decrease the life span of your car and put you at risk on the road. The following guide outlines some common problems so you know when to seek professional engine repairs as soon as possible.

3 Common Engine Problems

1. Overheating

If the temperature gauge starts creeping to high levels or you see smoke coming from under the hood, the engine is likely overheating. If the issue is due to low coolant levels, all you need to do is let the car cool down and add more fluid to the reservoir. If the car continues to overheat, there may be a leak, faulty radiator cap, or failing thermostat.

2. Loose or Failing Fuel Cap

If the cap is on but the check engine light is still illuminated, the cap may have cracks or broken seams keeping it from staying tight. If this isn’t resolved, it can throw the entire system off as fuel vapors escape the engine.

3. Failing to Start

If you turn the key in the ignition only to hear a clicking sound, the battery is likely dead. In most cases, this occurs when you leave the headlights on overnight. If you have a pair of cables and another car around, you can jump the battery to resolve this problem.

However, if you hear a cranking sound when you try to turn on the engine, the fuel filters are likely clogged or the starter failed.
