Hanging items on the walls can help homeowners transform their space. However, heavier items like mirrors or shelves can sometimes damage walls if hung incorrectly. When taking on any home improvement project, it’s important to have the right tools and go through all the essential steps to avoid problems down the line. These tips can help you ensure that all of your wall decor stays put.

3 Top Tips for Hanging Heavy Items on Walls

1. Determine the Wall Material You’re Working With

Before you get started, it’s important to understand the material your wall is made of, since that can impact what tools you use. Most modern homes use drywall, but plaster is common in older homes. The plaster is harder and more delicate than drywall. If you’re not sure, find an inconspicuous spot and try pushing a thumbtack into the surface. If it goes in without splintering the wall, it’s probably drywall. If it doesn’t go in or if the wall splinters, it’s probably plaster.

2. Use Expansion Anchors

home improvementExpansion anchors are fasteners that expand once they’re screwed into the wall to provide more stability. Drywall anchors are small plastic objects that you hammer into the wall after drilling a small hole. Then you screw the bolt into the anchor. For especially heavy items or those not attached to a stud, use a toggle anchor, which includes metal fasteners that secure it to the wall from the inside. If you’re hanging items on a plaster or brick wall, use masonry anchors instead.

3. Find the Studs

Studs are the parts of your wall that are attached to wood frames. These are better for hanging heavy objects because they offer more support than the wall material on its own. If your walls are drywall, use a stud finder to locate them. If you have plaster, locate an electrical box or outlet to find where a stud is placed. You can also try knocking on the wall to find where it’s not hollow or hang a strong magnet from a piece of string to find where metal screws are placed behind the wall.
