Many people have fond memories of stringing popcorn into a long garland, though not many know why or how this tradition began. The history of popcorn adorning Christmas trees dates back centuries. Here’s a quick look at the origins of this custom.

The History of Christmas Tree Decorating

Prior to Christianity taking hold in Europe, many pagan rituals included an evergreen tree or tree branch in the home. The symbolism differed amongst different faiths, but mostly it was believed the tree or branch would bring luck and prosperity. By 1500, people began bringing in pine trees to celebrate Adam and Eve on the 24th of December. Two apples were placed by the trees they called “Paradise Trees.” This was the beginning of the fruit and tree pairing.

The term “Paradise Tree” eventually changed to Christmas tree and was mainly practiced in Germany. Without the many varied assortments of decorations used today, the Germans had to improvise, adorning their trees with fruits, nuts, and other foods.

PopcornIt wasn’t until the 1800s that Queen Victoria celebrated Christmas with a decorated tree that the tradition became popular in Europe and North America. Cranberries, which were first harvested in the early 1800s made a logical addition to their homemade garlands for their seasonal appearance and festive colors. Popcorn was dyed in various colors and strung into the garland, sometimes mixed with cranberries. The first Christmas tree in Williamsburg, VA, was decorated with popcorn on strings, as no ready-made ornaments were available.

The Popcorn Tradition Today

With an abundance of glass, ceramic, and plastic premade ornaments available, people don’t have to make their Christmas tree decor as they once did. Though popcorn garlands aren’t as prevalent as they once were, they are still closely linked to Christmas. Making them remains a fun pastime for kids and is often done in schools, day cares, and even for family nights at home during the holidays. Furthermore, tubs of flavored popcorn are a popular gift this time of year.
