You may allow your pet on the furniture, but a kneading cat or chewing dog can damage your couch or favorite recliner. You can train your pet or chase after them with a spray bottle, but there are other ways to deal with the problem. Here’s how to protect your furniture without having to discipline your pet.

3 Ways to Protect Furniture From Pets

1. Place Pet Toys by Furniture

FurniturePlace a scratching post near the couch if your cat enjoys clawing the corners. The post gives them the satisfaction of performing their instinctual needs while protecting the fabric. Some dog breeds love to chew or burrow. A thick, rope-like toy allows them to chew and is healthy for their teeth.

2. Keep Your Pet Manicured

Pet’s nails damage certain fabrics, so it’s imperative to keep their nails trimmed. Leather is durable against a dog’s claws, but a cat’s nails will penetrate it easily. Microfiber and microsuede are durable materials with a tight weave. It’s harder for claws to puncture, and if the claws enter the fabric, its weave prevents the claws from ripping up sections of material.

3. Provide Covers or Beds

Polyester covers are an ideal way to provide a sleeping area for your pets. To help with shedding and dirt, denim and cotton products work fine. If your cat’s claws are regularly trimmed, they may still puncture cotton materials, but the claws will not go deep into the couch material. A cat or dog bed placed in their favorite spot, on or off the couch, gives them a warm cozy spot to lay, and they still get to be close to you.
