Trade jobs, such as plumbing and electrical work, are in high demand almost anywhere you look. When you complete trade school, it’ll be time to take full advantage of employment opportunities. To kickstart your career, use the following tips.

How to Get a Job After Trade School

1. Explore Trade School Services

Your trade school likely has a career services department, so take full advantage. They often will provide guidance on interview skills, finding jobs, and writing a resume. Many will maintain outside contacts that can connect you to employment agencies or career fairs so you can streamline your job search

2. Network

electricalIf you have a friend working in a trade, ask about their employment. They may know another contractor or service looking for technicians and specialists. Don’t hesitate to stop by repair shops and ask about available positions. If work isn’t available, many will still take your information in case they need an extra hand.

Stay in touch with classmates and teachers, as well. As they enter the workforce, they may provide leads to help you get a job. Your teachers may also have contacts and can provide a recommendation to help you get in the door.

3. Promote Your Job Skills

Trade schools prepare students to dive right into their field thanks to extensive hands-on training. Don’t downplay your skills during interviews. Let potential employers know that you have extensive training. List the manufacturers you may specialize in and jobs completed during internships for vocational training. Finally, mention skills you may have learned in school, such as how to clean a sewer line, repair a showerhead, or install a toilet.
