Taking the time to declutter is an essential part of the moving process. You don’t want to fill your moving truck with items you don’t need or find space for them inside your new home. However, it can be hard in the moment to sort through your belongings and decide what needs to go. The following offers advice for simplifying this process.

Do:

Deal with the paper first.

Paper tends to accumulate in the house. Go through your mail pile, instruction manuals drawer, and fast food coupons and decide what you need and don’t. Take some time and organize important documents to ensure that your birth certificates, social security cards, or wedding certificates are all accounted for before you move.

Separate your belongings into piles.

MovingSeparate your items into three categories: keep, throw away, and donate or sell. While this might lead to some difficult decisions, avoid holding on to anything you haven’t used for six months if its purpose is not seasonal. This applies to clothes, books, whimsical trinkets, and anything else that has been collecting dust in your closet.

Don’t:

Wait until the last minute.

Give yourself a two-week decluttering period to get organized while you pack. One of the benefits of early decluttering is that you have an ample amount of time to sell or donate items that you don’t want anymore.

Overwhelm yourself by tackling big rooms first.

Start small. Work on boxing up non-essential items from smaller rooms, like your closets, first and then move on to bigger rooms. Also, try not to jump from room to room while packing. If the boxes are sorted by room when you load them into your moving vehicle, unloading them will be much easier.
