From burning candles to illuminated decorations, the holiday season is filled with potential fire dangers. Every home should have at least one fire extinguisher, and each member of the household should know how to use it. But there are some ways you can prevent or minimize the chances of a fire in the first place; below, a few of these methods are discussed in more detail.

A Guide to Holiday Fire Prevention

1. Hang Lights Safely

Holiday lights are festive and fun, but they can also pose a fire risk. Never overload electrical outlets; don't plug more than three sets of lights in one socket, as this could cause a spark. Before hanging them, make sure all lights are in good working order, that there are no broken or missing bulbs, and that the wires are strong, tight, and without fraying. Unplug all holiday lights, including those on your tree, before going to bed and prior to leaving the house.

2. Be Mindful in the Kitchen

Keep an eye on items baking in the oven and use covers on stovetop pans. Promptly clean up any spills and splatters from the stovetop or inside the oven to prevent them from catching on fire.

3. Make Space Around the Fireplace

When decorating, keep flammable objects away from the fireplace. This includes items like garland or stockings hung over it—anything that could come loose and fall in the fire or ignite from a wayward spark. Set the tree and presents away from the reach of the flames, and whenever you have a blaze going, use a fireplace screen. A fire extinguisher should always be within easy reach of the fireplace in case of emergencies.
