Working as a real estate agent can be as lucrative as it is fulfilling. Not only do these professionals have the potential to make considerable commissions, but they also get to help clients find their dream homes. If you’re thinking about helping families buy and sell property for a living, here’s what you should know about getting started.

3 Steps to Becoming a Real Estate Agent

1. Complete the Required Coursework

Assuming you already meet the minimum requirements—you must be at least 18 years old and have legal US residency—the first step is enrolling in Course I. Unlike Courses II and III, Course I must be completed before taking the license exam. Comprised of 30 hours, it covers the basics of buying and selling in the Minnesota market. If you opt to take the exam before completing Courses II and III, you must enroll in them immediately after.

2. Take the Real Estate License Exam

real estateYou can purchase Broker and Sales practice tests from Pearson VUE. Once you feel ready to take the actual exam, register for your session here. On the day of the test, you’ll need two forms of valid ID, one of which has a photo. You must also provide your certificate of completion for Course I. Also, you may bring a nonprogrammable calculator to use during the exam.

3. Work for an Employing Broker

Once you pass the test, you must have a licensed real estate broker submit the final application on your behalf. In other words, you must secure a position with a broker who's happy to help you start your career. After they submit all the proper documentation, the Commerce Department will review it. Assuming everything is in order, you’ll eventually receive notification that your license has been approved.
