If you’re a homeowner, you may rely on a central-air HVAC system to heat and cool your home. The purpose of its filter is to prevent the unit from becoming clogged with dust or dirt and reducing your indoor air quality. It’s recommended that you change your filter—or clean it if it’s not disposable—every 90 days or more often if you have allergies, asthma, pets, or younger children. Here’s a closer look at selecting the right filter and setting it up.

How to Replace Your HVAC Filter

Determine the Size

Turn off the system and find the HVAC filter, which is typically located between the return duct and the unit. You may have to remove a cover to gain access. Take the old filter out and find the dimensions printed on the side. Alternatively, you can use a tape measure to determine which width, length, and thickness to buy. A common size is 20” X 25” X 1”.

Remove & Replace

When inserting the new filter, ensure it’s pointed in the same direction as the airflow. An arrow or other guide printed on the packaging should tell you which direction the filter should face.

Types of Filters

Pleated filters are made of polyester fiber that’s effective in filtering out pollutants. Washable filters eliminate the need to purchase a new filter every season. HEPA filters are the best for people with allergies because they screen contaminants almost completely.

The MERV rating indicates how effective an air filter is in trapping dust particles and keeping them from recirculating in your home. The rating ranges from 1 to 16, with 16 being the best. HEPA filters are available with MERV ratings as high as 20 for ultimate protection.

Not all HVAC systems can handle a filter with a high MERV rating, however, so understanding the capability of a specific system is essential before purchasing a filter. Until you can speak to a professional, stick to a rating between 9 and 12.
