If you’re planning to move your kitchen supplies into storage before a move, the task may seem overwhelming at first. Since you don’t use all your kitchen tools and utensils every day, it’s easy to underestimate how much you’ve accumulated over the years until you’re trying to condense these tools into smaller spaces. Some of the items are also likely fragile. The following offers advice to make the project easier.

How to Simplify Preparing Your Kitchen for Storage

1. Stock Up on Moving Supplies

Besides tape and boxes of every size—especially medium and large ones—you should also consider getting bubble wrap, packing peanuts, and cardboard separators. Don’t be afraid to get more than you might need since most homeowners tend to underestimate. Also, keep thick pens or markers handy to label the boxes as you go.

2. Non-Essentials Go First

You’ll likely need to keep using some of your kitchen tools and utensils right up until a day or two before you move, so figure out what you rarely use and put those in storage now. As you get closer to moving day, continue packing away items that you don’t think you’ll need before then. When it’s time to box up the essentials, order delivery or eat out.

3. Pack Appliances Last

storageYour appliances will likely be heavy, and some of them must be removed carefully, lest you create a water or gas leak. If you feel comfortable unplugging and moving them yourself, try to disassemble them so that you can individually wrap the especially fragile parts. Ask an electrician, plumber, or professional moving service if you’re not sure what you’re doing.

4. Use the Supplies Generously

Wrap every remotely fragile item in bubble wrap, separate them from each other in the boxes with the cardboard dividers, and cover them in packing peanuts. Close the boxes with two layers of tape to be sure that they won’t open while being transported to storage or your new home. Then, label the boxes with an arrow to show which side is up.

5. Organize Your Food

Focus on eating your most perishable foods before moving day, but keep some snacks around for everyone to enjoy between meals. As the time draws nearer, throw away any food that has expired. Have coolers and bags of ice on hand for any foods you’re keeping that need to be refrigerated.
