The anaerobic septic system is the most popular type of septic in America, but the aerobic system can provide a better cleansing of the waste. Both types use bacteria to remove waste byproducts, but choosing which is best for your home depends on your needs. This guide explains some of the advantages and disadvantages of these two systems.

Anaerobic Septic Systems

Anaerobic systems are comprised of a single tank with two pipes for intake and outtake. The intake pipe delivers wastewater from the building, and the outtake pipe sends the watered-down waste to the leach field. They are less expensive than the aerobic alternative and provide adequate drainage.

Anaerobic bacteria don’t require oxygen to survive, so they can digest the solid and liquid waste in the tank. It takes around 24 hours for the bacteria to sufficiently finish its supply, so too much waste can cause a backup in the system.

Aerobic Septic Systems

Aerobic systems have three-tanks. The first tank, or trash tank, performs like an anaerobic tank. Instead of going to the leach field, the by product enters a second tank known as the aeration chamber. Oxygen is added to feed aerobic bacteria in the tank. Aerobic bacteria burn energy Septic Systemat a much faster rate than anaerobic, thereby reducing the amount of waste quicker.

As the aerobic bacteria continue to grow, they settle to the bottom of the tank, and the remaining waste floats to the top. This waste then passes through a clarifier and into the pump tank. The pump tank sends the triple-filtered waste out to a very small leach field, or in many cases, directly to a sprinkler system.

While aerobic systems are more effective at waste removal, they also require a strict maintenance schedule. However, many come with an alarm to notify the homeowner if there are any problems with the system.
