Just like their owners, dogs' needs change as they get older. Senior dogs can be loving, playful, and well-trained, but they need a little extra attention to keep them healthy and thriving. Here's what most veterinarians recommend.

How to Care for an Aging Pet

1. Establish a Healthy Routine

Senior dogs have different nutritional needs than younger ones, so choose a formula designed for older pets.  Portion sizes may also need to change to maintain optimal weight. Work with your veterinarian to determine how much food your dog should get each day. While it may be harder for your pooch to move around, daily exercise is important. If going for runs and playing fetch are no longer options, choose gentle activities, like walking on grass. Your pet also needs regular grooming and teeth cleaning to keep his coat and skin healthy and avoid tooth loss.

2. Provide Accommodations

VeterinariansIt can be difficult for older dogs to move around, so make it easier to navigate your house. Keep your dog on one floor so he won't have to go up and down stairs. Place a comfortable pet bed where he can get to it easily. Make sure it has low sides so he doesn't have to climb in. Move his food and water closer to the place he likes to spend the most time during the day.

3. Take Him to a Veterinarian

Senior dogs are more likely to develop health problems, so they need to have regular pet health exams at least twice a year. At these visits, your vet will identify the early signs of any health conditions, and your dog will receive the preventive care he needs to keep him safe from illnesses and parasites that are dangerous at his age. You should also take him to the veterinarian if you notice changes, such as variations in appetite, trouble breathing, or lethargy.
