Whether you’re dealing with an unbearable toothache or would like to have a whiter smile, a dentist appointment is the first step to finding a solution. If you’re nervous, you might be tempted to put the visit off. Instead, use the following tips to prepare for your appointment.

3 Tips for Getting Ready for a Dentist Visit

1. Mentally Prepare

For many people, the thought of dental work can cause anxiety. If you’re feeling nervous about your appointment, start preparing yourself mentally a few weeks in advance. First, call the office to ask what your appointment will entail, including how long the visit will last and if you should take a painkiller before arriving. Whenever you start thinking about the appointment and getting nervous, take a deep breath and visualize yourself arriving at the office, sitting back in the chair, and leaving happier and healthier.

2. Brush & Floss

dentistDuring a standard teeth cleaning, your dentist will use their professional tools to scrape away a hardened residue called tartar. As a patient, it’s your responsibility to clear away food debris and bacteria that has gathered in the short-term. Therefore, unless you’re heading to the dentist first thing in the morning, you should brush and floss again before being on your way.

3. Get There Early

If it’s your first time at the dentist, or you haven’t been there in a while, get to your appointment at least 10 to 15 minutes early. This way, you’ll have some extra time to fill out forms, get acquainted with the staff, and relax a bit before jumping into the reclining chair. You might also need to present your dental insurance card, past dental records, and a form of payment, so make sure to have these on hand.
