The margarita was the sixth most popular cocktail in the world in 2018, and why shouldn’t it be? It has the right combination of sweet and sour, mixed perfectly with a touch of saltiness, and of course, tequila. Here are a few facts about one of America’s favorite drinks.

What to Know About Margaritas

1. The Largest Margarita Was 25 Feet Tall

Nick Nicora created the largest margarita at the 2012 California State fair. Consisting of over 2,100 gallons of tequila, 2,800 gallons of mix, and 50 gallons of lime juice, its final volume came in at 10,500 gallons. It took 20 people several hours to pour the ingredients into a 25-foot-tall blender.

2. The $1,200 Margarita

MargaritaThe Rooftop Bar & Penthouse Lounge in Manhattan created the $1,200 cocktail for charity, where half the proceeds went to the drinker’s charity of choice. Made from high-quality ingredients like $1,800 tequila and $450 ice made from Lois Roederer Cristal Champagne, it was delivered in a hand-blown Hungarian crystal glass.

However, down the road in New York City is The London Bar, which offers the $1,200 Billionaire’s Margarita. It is made with limited-edition Patrón en Lalique Serie 1 and Rémy Martin Louis XIII.

3. Its Origin Is Unknown

There are several stories explaining the drink’s origin, but no one knows which is correct. What is known: it’s been around since the 1930s. It is similar to the sidecar, which uses cognac and lemon instead of tequila and lemon, and the daisy, which uses brandy. However, the 1937 Cafe Royal Cocktail Book, by William Tarling, mentions a drink called the Picador with the same ingredients and portions of the margarita.
