A sinus lift, otherwise known as a sinus augmentation, is an involved dental procedure that creates better support and strength within patients’ jawbones. If your oral surgeon recently recommended this procedure, you might have some questions about why it’s necessary and what it entails. To better prepare for your appointment, utilize the information below.

When Do Oral Surgeons Recommend a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift is most often recommended for patients who want dental implants but don’t have enough jawbone to support the device. With this procedure, the oral surgeon adds bone to the top of the jaw, increasing the space between the jaw and sinuses.

This treatment can also help repair gum disease damage. Extensive periodontitis may result in tooth loss, after which the root structure begins to decompose, leading to the maxillary sinus cavity shrinking.

What Does the Procedure Entail?

oral surgeonFirst, your oral surgeon will take X-rays of your jaw to figure out how much bone material must be grafted to add enough height. They’ll then either gather material from your hip or tibia or request matter from a donor. If they can’t obtain natural bone matter, they may opt for a synthetic material.

During the procedure, they’ll begin by making small incisions in the gums to expose the underlying bone. Next, they’ll lift the tissue to expose the cavity bone by the sinuses, then raise the bone to create additional space for the new material. After the material has been carefully placed, the surgeon will stitch the tissue back together to cover the incision.

Once they’ve stitched the surgery site, they’ll provide you with a gauze pad. Biting down on it will help create a clot to stop bleeding. You’ll need to keep a piece of gauze in place for at least 24 hours following the surgery, changing it once an hour to keep the incision clean.

Over the next few days, you’ll likely experience a bit of tenderness and swelling around the surgery site; you can use over-the-counter pain relievers and ice packs to combat these symptoms. During the first week after surgery, you’ll need to avoid blowing your nose or sneezing forcefully, as this could dislodge the implant. After seven to 10 days, your surgeon will remove the stitches.
