Dentists recommend daily flossing for proper oral health care. When done correctly, this process discards leftover food particles you might miss with brushing alone. Remaining debris can eventually lead to decaying teeth and gingivitis, which is why the American Dental Association (ADA) emphasizes flossing in conjunction with brushing. Here’s some advice to help ensure your teeth and gums are healthy.

3 Tips for Effective Flossing

1. Pick an Appropriate Floss

While there several brands of floss, choose one with the ADA Seal of Acceptance; this means  dentists approve the manufacturer. There are two main types of floss: nylon and polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE). Nylon is the more popular option, which is available in waxed and unwaxed versions. They come in a variety of flavors, but the single strand of fiber shreds easily. The more expensive PTFE floss’s single filament is more durable, but both are effective if you use them correctly.

2. Use the Proper Technique

dentistDon’t waste your time with a lousy flossing technique. Pull about 18 inches of floss from the dispenser, wrapping each end around your respective middle fingers. Hold it taut with your index fingers and use up-and-down motions between your teeth, curving it into a C shape when you reach the gum-line to slide between your gum and tooth. Alternatively, ask your dentist for their recommended flossing technique.

3. Don’t Reuse Floss

Using an old piece of floss is highly unsanitary. Not only could it be weakened by prior use, but leftover food particles may find their way back into your mouth. The ADA recommends a maximum one usage for each floss strand, so discard the strand after use.
