You certainly hope that disaster will never strike, but if it does, it pays to be prepared. Storm shelters will keep your family safe during the storm, and if properly stocked, can keep you supplied for an extended time if you’re left without assistance. Gather the essentials and keep them in your shelter to make the most of this space.

A Checklist for Stocking Storm Shelters

1. Food & Water

Depending on the size of your shelter, you may want to stock enough food to last anywhere from a few days or a few weeks. Store water in food-grade plastic bottles, with enough for one gallon per person per day.

Store non-perishable foods such as powdered milk, vacuum-packed pouches, and dried fruit. Canned foods are also good, such as beans, soups, and vegetables. Include a small gas-powered stove with fuel to heat up your food.

2. Medication

Include special needs unique to your family. Think about the things your family could not go without. This could be a child’s asthma inhaler, the baby’s diapers and wet wipes, or grandpa’s prescriptions. These things may expire before your non-perishable goods, so keep a schedule to swap them out when needed.

3. Warm Clothing

Include warm clothing such as coats if people need to go out in the cold or want to stay warm as they move about the shelter. Pack also some towels; people may need them to keep up their hygiene or dry off after their trip to the shelter.

4. First Aid Kit

A first aid kit is important since you likely won’t have access to medical professionals if you’re in the shelter. You can pick up a basic kit at a drugstore.

5. Lights

It will likely be dark in the shelter, so you’ll want to bring your own lighting. Include both lanterns and flashlights. Pack extra batteries and store them outside of the lanterns, so they don’t corrode and ruin the light.
